The City of Auckland - The largest Polynesian city in the world, Auckland has a multi-cultural population of one million. With its dynamic mix of European and Pacific Island influences, Auckland is an international yet distinctly New Zealand city.
The City of Sails, as it is known, counts more boats per capita than any other place in the world. From hosting America.s Cup to hundreds of sailing ships, water taxis, and ferries, Auckland's connection to the water defines the city. Not only is Auckland surrounded on all sides by bays, harbors, and the ocean, but the city also is ringed by seven volcanoes and miles of beaches, making it a spectacular setting.
Course Information
As a large and well-established university, the University of Auckland offers a broad range of courses more than 150 disciplines. Students will find all the available disciplines plus course descriptions online at http://ndeva.aukland.ac.nz/ndeva/course_catalog/uofak/subtoc.asp.
Please note that not all subjects are offered every semester or year. Students with specific questions regarding courses should contact their IES Representative and may be referred directly to the international student adviser in the appropriate faculty.
Credits and Course Load - IES Auckland students must carry at least 15 semester credit hours. IES students take regular courses at the University of Auckland, where classes are offered on a point system. A full course load of 6-7 points per semester is defined as full time. IES awards 4 credits for each course and students are expected to enroll in at least 15 credits per semester.
Types of Accommodation
The Railway Campus - Located in a renovated and vintage era train station, the Railway Campus provides 230 modern, furnished rooms with private baths and televisions. IES students are housed in doubles and triples. Students have the choice of cooking for themselves in two large, well-appointed communal kitchens or opting for one of the meal plans offered through the in-house cafe. The facilities include a gym, a computer lab with internet access, television lounge, private study room, a music room, and an outdoor barbecue area and surrounding garden.
Homestays- Placements are available throughout the city and surrounding suburbs. Students have private rooms and the option of various meal plans. Students in homestays can have up to a 30-minute commute, but the opportunity to get to know the "real" New Zealand and live with the Kiwis is well worth it.
Independent Housing - This option may take considerable effort and perseverance. For those students interested in finding their own apartments, the University of Auckland Student Accommodation Office and IES can assist students with their search. Students can expect commutes of up to ? hour or more. Rent, utilities, furniture, rental, meals, deposits, and all contractual arrangements are the responsibility of the individual students. Students choosing independent housing will receive a full room and board refund from IES, as long as they notify the IES Chicago office no later than the deadline listed on the Independent Housing Form for their program.
