Eligibility
The City of Buenos Aires
Poised between the sweeping Rio de la Plata and the legendary pampas, Buenos Aires is a city of contrasts. The wide avenues, sprawling parks, and elegant 19th century Parisian-style architecture of downtown compose on picture. Another view catches narrow, crowded streets, graffiti and political posters, and the grit of modern metropolis. Here the soulful strains of tango came to life more than 100 year ago and continue to speak for Argentina.
One-third of the country's population of 38 million lives in and around the capital, making Buenos Aires the hub of public debate, political action, and reform movements. Its central role means it is the ideal place to study the challenges of the developing nation, its political and economic structures, and local, regional, and international relations. The interplay between politics and the arts is also a prime subject for study here, through contemporary film, drama, literature, and the fine arts in the city's many galleries and performance venues.
