Eligibility
The City of Christchurch - Christchurch is one of the oldest and most European cities in New Zealand. Located in the heart of the spectacular beauty of the South Island, Christchurch, known as the Garden City, is ideally situated to explore the rugged Southern Alps, the fjords, and the miles of endless coastline.
Whether punting on the Avon River, exploring the International Antarctic Center, or relaxing in the many cafes, Christchurch offers plenty to do and provides a sophisticated base for the adventurous students. The city also offers a vast array of outdoor activities such as skiing, climbing, rafting, and mountain biking. A wealth of cultural resources, such as the Arts Center and events like the International Film Festival, also add to the dimension of this fascinating city.
Course Information - Students select courses from the complete curricular offerings of the University of Canterbury, which has more than 50 academic departments.
Students should look over the course disciplines listed on the University of Canterbury web site in order to find the courses in which they are most interested. Students may access course descriptions for all courses online at www.canterbury.ac.nz/deptcentres.htm#academic.
Please note that not all subjects are offered every semester or year. Students with specific questions regarding courses should contact their IES Representative and may be referred directly to the international student adviser in the appropriate faculty.
Credits and Course Load- IES Christchurch students must carry at least 15 semester credit hours. IES students take regular courses at the University of Canterbury, where classes are offered on a point system. A full course load of 6-7 points per semester is defined as full time. IES awards 4 credits for each course and students are expected to enroll in at least 15 credits per semester.
Types of Accommodation
Ilam Village Apartments - Ilam Village is home to 330 New Zealand and international residents who are housed in apartments (6 people in each). There are two types of apartments-24 in older existing buildings, and 32 in brand-new buildings. Both are fully furnished and all bedrooms are singles with large study areas, individual telephone and computer outlets, and laundry facilities. Students who elect to live in Illam Village apartments can prepare their own food therefore, meals are not provided.
Residence Halls - Residence halls are unique community living environments where students of a variety of backgrounds interact. These halls all provide a single bedroom for each student, three meals per day, organized social activities, and free tutoring and course help. Living in a residence hall is an exciting and fun experience for students and it allows them to meet peers from around the world. The emphasis on community is exemplified by the many sporting and social events that take place each semester.
Independent Housing - The option to find housing independent of IES is also available. Although this option may take considerable effort and perseverance, the rewards of finding a housing option that more closely fit your needs may be worth it. The cost of an apartment or home stay will depend on many factors but the University of Canterbury Accommodations Office and IES will assist you in your search. Students can expect commutes of up to half an hour or more. Rent, utilities, furniture, rental, meals, deposits, and all contractual arrangements are the responsibility of the individual students. Students choosing independent housing will receive a full room and board refund from IES, as long as they notify the IES Chicago office no later than the deadline listed on the Independent Housing Form for their program.
