    University Studies

Albert-Ludwigs-Universit䴠Freiburg - Direct enrollment at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universit䴠Freiburg is an integral part of the program design at IES Freiburg. The University program offers a wide variety of courses in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Students should be prepared to work independently, according to the German system of higher education.

Students who do not feel confident of their German skills at the end of the intensive language instruction have the option of taking specialized language courses for foreigners for the initial university experience but are also encouraged to take regular university courses with a supporting tutorial.

Students enrolled for the fall semester only, who must leave upon the completion of their IES courses, may not enroll in University courses since they would miss too many sessions due to incompatible academic calendars.

P䤡gogische Hochschule Freiburg (Pedagogical University of Freiburg) - Offers courses designed for those going into the teaching profession.

Zeichen-und Malschule Georg Schell - Offers a number of studio art options.

    The City of Freiburg
Freiburg, located on the edge of the scenic Black Forest and in close proximity to the neighboring countries of France and Switzerland and to many interesting regions of Germany, offers an ideal location for a study abroad experience. Nowadays a modern, cosmopolitan city renowned for its distinguished heritage of higher learning, Freiburg's skyline is still dominated by the famous gothic M? (cathedral); and small streams (B䣨le) dating from the Middle Ages still flow along the narrow streets in the city center. Small enough to have nearly everything within easy walking or biking distance, Freiburg is still large enough to offer a rich cultural life of its own.

    Types of Accommodation

IES Housing - IES Freiburg locates comfortable housing that reflects typical student accommodations. Students are placed in a variety of co-ed German residence halls throughout the city and usually rely on public transportation or bikes to get to and from the IES Center. IES students are housed with German students in a suite arrangement with a shared kitchen and bathroom. As is customary in Germany, the suites themselves are co-ed and have single rooms. Students rely on their own resources for meals, usually preparing some in their residences and eating others in inexpensive student cafeterias.

Independent Housing - Independently arranged housing is seldom possible due to the severe housing shortage in Freiburg. Upon acceptance, students who elect to arrange their own housing must notify the IES Chicago office no later than the deadline listed on the Independent Housing Form for their program.
