Program Focus
The IES Granada program offers two program options: the Intermediate Spanish Program and the Advanced Spanish Program. Both programs offer students the opportunity to learn about the distinct qualities of southern Spain with its multi-cultural heritage. IES Granada takes advantage of the Universidad de Granada's strong Arabic, Islamic, and North Africa programs to introduce students to Spain's Moorish heritage and its continuing links with North Africa. IES curriculum takes full advantage, as well, of Andalusia and southern Spain, the colorful land of flamenco and bull fighting, and the city of Granada, the home of 20th century Spain's most famous poet, Federico Garcia Lorca.
Universidad de Granada
The Universidad de Granada, founded by Charles V in the early 16th century, is the third largest university in Spain. Because of its size, the university offers diverse opportunities for students. It has particular strengths in such areas as Maghreb and Arabic Studies, Computer Science, Economics, Fine Arts, Health Sciences, Latin American Studies, and Women's Studies. The Physical Education department offers a wide range of athletic opportunities. The university has an active extracurricular program and encourages international students to get involved. The attractiveness of its offerings has made Granada the European university with the most exchange students from the European Union.
Eligibility
The City of Granada
Granada, the last capital of Moorish Spain, is a vibrant city today with a youthful population that offers students the clearest window into Spain's unique historical symbiosis of Arabic, Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. Along the medieval streets of the Albaicin and among the palaces of the Alhambra, Spain's Islamic past is palpable. The narrow streets of the downtown area offer a large attractive mix of cafes, Moorish style tearooms, and tapas bars. Granada's southern Spanish location makes the city a take off point of excursions to North Africa and gives easy access to Mediterranean beaches and the snow-capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada. The city has a sunny moderate climate throughout most of the academic year.

Internships
Beginning with the Spring 2006 semester, IES internships and Service Learning will be offered as academic options, with students earning IES credit. Internships in Granada are largely limited to non-profits and the tourism industry. Internships and service learning opportunities have seminar components. Internship applications are mailed to admitted students and must be returned to IES Chicago by the deadline stated on the application. Only students who will receive home school credit may participate in the internship program. Placement depends upon availability, a student's background and skills, and language requirements. Final selections are made after the potential intern is interviewed in Granada. Internship placements may be quite competitive and cannot be guaranteed in advance.
Types of Accommodation
Home Stays - In Granada, most students live in private homes with ses and/or families. Students take two meals daily with their hosts when the program is in session. In many cases, more than one IES student is placed with a se and/or family. All admitted students must complete a housing form where they can list their preferences or special needs. Vegetarians or students who follow a strict diet are assigned to homes with cooking privileges and receive a credit for meals.
Student Residence Halls - Housing is available at student resident halls, owned or approved by the University, and in private colegios mayors. The residence halls include two meals per day during the week and the Colegios Mayores provide all meals. These accommodations also sponsor social and leisure activities. Accommodation in residence halls cannot be guaranteed, and residence halls cannot accommodate vegetarian diets. Admitted students interested in living in a residence hall or a colegio mayor must complete a special Housing Form by the deadline noted on the form. Additional materials are also required.
Colegio Mayor- A limited number of academically strong students may apply to live in a colegio mayor; priority is given to academic year students. Colegios mayores are single-sex dormitories run by the University of Granada; various colegios exist in Granada and each has its own unique social and academic environment. This housing option includes up to 20 meals per week and cannot accommodate vegetarian diets. Additional materials are required as part of the selection process; complete information is contained in students’ admission packets.
Independent Housing - Students who have lived abroad before or who have friends or family in Granada may wish to arrange their own housing. However, IES strongly encourages students to participate in housing located by IES and accepts no responsibility for other arrangements. Upon acceptance, students who elect to arrange their own housing must notify the IES Chicago office no later than the deadline listed on the Independent Housing Form for their program.
