London and the IES Center
London, an international center for law, politics, finance, and the arts, combines a cosmopolitan mixture of language and culture with centuries-old traditions and attracts visitors from around the globe. London's international character is evident in every neighborhood, where people of different cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds live and work together. This diversity is remaking London, bringing a new energy to its business, arts, and sense of heritage.
The IES London Center, situated in central London in an elegant, 18th century Georgian terrace building, is a two-minute walk from the British Museum. Located in Bloomsbury, the heart of literary London, IES London draws on London's world-class educational and government institutions, art galleries, museums, and theaters to offer students exceptional field study and internship opportunities.

Internships - An internship with tutorial exists on the London program for 3 semester credits. Options are available in the following areas: Arts, Media & Museum Internships, Business Internships, Education Internships, Parliamentary & Political Internships, Theatre Internships. Students must display high levels of responsibility and self-motivation at all times and have relevant prior coursework or work experience in the field of the internship for which they are applying.
Credits and Course load - Students must carry 15 to 19 semester credit hours. Generally 5 IES Center courses equal 15 semester credits.
Types of Accommodation
IES Student Residence Halls - The 11-story IES Student Residence Hall is located on The King's Road in Chelsea, one of London's most sought after residential areas. The IES Student Residence Hall is home to students from more than 30 countries. Typically two students share a bedroom with en suite bathroom, twin beds that can be bunked, two writing desks, two lockable wardrobes, a telephone and two data ports with free web access. Every six students share a kitchen on their floor equipped with basic cooking utensils and appliances, including a microwave, refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher. Each floor has a common area furnished lounge. Students normally prepare meals for themselves or eat in local, inexpensive restaurants.
Homestays - Students who choose to live with families have the opportunity to integrate more fully into British daily life and culture. Family housing is located in Central London (Zone 1) and the more residential areas, primarily in northern London (Zones 2 and 3). In general, family housing in Zone 1 will provide less regular contact and usually no meals with the host family (some placements in Zone 1 may include daily breakfast; all placements offer light kitchen use), but offers the greatest independence and the shortest commute times to the IES London Center (20-30 minutes). Family housing in Zones 2 and 3 normally offers a more fully integrated family living experience with regular contact and some meals with the host family (breakfast daily as well as 4-5 evening meals per week in some placements), but offers less independence and involves longer commutes to the IES Center (45-60 minutes).
Independent Housing - Students who have previously lived abroad or who have family or friends in London may wish to arrange their own housing. However, IES strongly encourages students to participate in housing located by IES and cannot accept responsibility for other arrangements. Upon acceptance, students who elect to arrange their own housing must notify the IES Chicago office no later than the deadline listed on the Independent Housing Form for their program.
