Program Focus
The IES Madrid program consists of a wide range of courses taught at the IES Center in Spanish by Spanish faculty, as well as the opportunity to register for courses at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. The principal focus of courses at the IES Center is the development of the students’ ability to communicate in Spanish by strengthening their oral and written skills. Language study is required and begins during the orientation period.
La Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the IES Center
IES Madrid is located on the campus of the distinguished Universidad Complutense de Madrid, whose courses, activities and facilities are open to IES students. The program's goal is to immerse students in contemporary Spanish life through challenging coursework, internships, field trips, intercambios with university students, and recreational and cultural events including fútbol games and a Cinema Forum. The IES Center in Madrid is located in the Ciudad Universitaria of the Universidad Complutense de Mardid, which has a student population of more than 140,000. The Center is housed in the Colegio Mayor Universitario San Agustin, a university coed residence hall. The section of the residence hall occupied by IES Madrid includes offices, a small library, and classroom space. IES students have full access to the residence hall snack bar, gymnasium, and common areas, providing ample opportunity for interaction with the Spanish students living in the colegio.
In order to promote interaction with native Spanish speakers and to offer experience with Spanish university life, IES encourages and facilitates enrollment in courses at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. A variety of university courses are available to both semester and full-year students. Students register for courses when they arrive in Madrid. Semester students enrolled in the Universidad Complutense must be able to remain in Madrid for the university's final exams in order to receive credit. The university fall calendar extends through early February and the spring calendar through early June.
Students who would like more information on the Universidad Complutense may visit its web site at www.ucm.es.

Both business and politics offer possibilities for fieldwork and internships.

Students enroll in "SP490: Spanish for Heritage Speakers," an intensive reading and writing course, and in a seminar that prepares them for the examination that leads to the Certificate of Spanish as a Foreign Language (El Diploma Superior de Español, or D.S.E.). IES Madrid also has an agreement with the Cámara Oficial de Comercio e Industria de Madrid-Universidad de Alcalá de Henares that allows IES students to take the examination which leads to the Certificate in Spanish for Business Students (Certificado Superior de Español de los Negocios). These are the two most prestigious certificates awarded for Spanish language skills. Students fulfill the requirements for their remaining credits through enrollment in at least two university courses and electives from IES courses or an internship.
Types of Accommodation
Home Stays - In Madrid, most students live in private homes with señoras and/or families. Students take breakfast and the main mid-day meal daily with their hosts when the program is in session. In many cases, more than one IES student is placed with a señora and/or family. Students may also choose to live in a home stay with kitchen privileges. In this living arrangement, students have full access to the kitchen and are responsible for all of their own meals. This option includes a $500 reimbursement per semester.
Apartments - Limited space is available in apartments located by IES in residential areas near the IES Center and the Universidad Complutense. The apartments are fully furnished; utilities and regular cleaning are included, as well as the support of a Spanish resident assistant. Spanish university students may share the apartments with IES students. Meals are not included.
Student Residence Halls - Housing for a limited number of students is available at an additional cost of $1,000 per semester at student residence halls on the campus of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and in the city. This housing option includes all meals with the exception of Saturday night dinners. Meals are taken at the dining room of the Colegio Mayor. Accommodation in residence halls cannot be guaranteed, and residence halls cannot accommodate vegetarian diets. Admitted students interested in living in a residence hall must complete a Residence Hall Housing Form by the deadline noted on the form. Additional materials are also required.
Independent Housing - Students who have lived abroad before or who have friends or family in Madrid may wish to arrange their own housing. However, IES strongly encourages students to participate in housing located by IES and accepts no responsibility for other arrangements. Upon acceptance, students who elect to arrange their own housing must notify the IES Chicago office no later than the deadline listed on the Independent Housing Form for their program.
