The program consists of a selection of offerings in music history, music theory, and performance studies. The music history and music theory courses are open to all students (usually music majors) with the appropriate prerequisites; performance studies are available only to those admitted to the Music Performance Workshop. To be admitted to the workshop, students must submit a workshop application after their admittance to the IES Vienna program and have an on-site interview and audition.

Vienna is situated on the River Danube at the edge of the majestic Austrian Alps and has been an important crossroads since the time of the Romans. It is a charming city as well as a cosmopolitan metropolis of timeless fascination, and its unparalleled opera houses, museums, and theaters are as famous today as they were a century ago.
