    Melbourne and Victoria
Victoria has the second largest population with more than 4.5 million people from culturally diverse backgrounds. It is a place of great contrasts- of ocean beaches and mountain ranges, deserts and forests, volcanic plains and vast sheep and wheat farms. The state has long been regarded as the cultural center of Australia; with a historic architectural elegance that characterizes the capital Melbourne and our other regional cities. Victorians combine a strong cultural tradition with a contemporary and relaxed lifestyle and a passionate interest in sports. Victoria is also a major center of education and research in Australia.

    Campuses

Please note that large distances between Melbourne, Geelong and Warrnambool make studying at more than one campus impossible. Students must select courses at only one of the campuses.

Students in wetsuitsGeelong Campus (Geelong pop.200,000)- Geelong is Victoria's second largest city and boasts one of the best lifestyles in Australia, with all the amenities of a major center as well as real country friendliness. Melbourne is only an hour-long train or car ride away. Some of Australia's best beaches, including Bells Beach and Torquay are only 15 minutes away. The Geelong region is rich and diverse. Along with a vibrant city center, cosmopolitan cafe culture and eclectic shopping, the region contains laid back coastal towns and countrysides dotted with vineyards. There are plenty of opportunities to experience outdoor activities from sailing, surfing and scuba diving to the more recent pursuits of wakeboarding and kite surfing. The picturesque Geelong campus is located in a natural setting of landscaped gardens and natural bush attracting native Australian birds and animals. It is a traditional, self-contained campus with almost 5,000 students; it is sort of like a small village.

Melbourne Campus (Melbourne pop. 3.6 million)- The Melbourne campus is located in the eastern suburb of Burwood. Melbourne is the cultural hub of Australia, and if big cities are your thing, then Melbourne has it all. The landscaping of the heart of the campus has brought life, movement and color to complement the newly erected, uniquely designed and award-winning buildings. Walking and bike tracks connect the campus to Melbourne's extensive system of bicycle trails. The Melbourne campus is accessible by public transport from the city center.

Students with starfishWarrnambool Campus (Warrnambool pop.28,000)- Warrnambool is at the end of the Great Ocean Road, and is famous for the whales that come every winter with their young. Three hours from Melbourne by car, the resident population doubles in summer (December to February), when tourists arrive to enjoy the nightlife, the fishing and miles and miles of deserted surf beaches. Inland, the rich volcanic plains sustain prize sheep and cattle, and further west the fertile terra rossa of Coonawaara produces Australia's best wines. Warrnambool's economic health depends on the fortunes of the regional community, but its economy revolves around service industries such as retailing, tourism, health and education. In the tradition of the city, Warrnambool and its university depend on each other. University students have a big influence on the city and are active participants in the community. Student culture enlivens the city with bands, concerts, festivals, films, politics, and the exploits of the legendary Sharks Football (Australian Rules) Club. There are 1,000 students studying at Deakin's Warrnambool Campus.
