    University Affiliation - Vaxjo University (enrollment of 11,000)

    Vaxjo University is the second largest university in southern Sweden. It has a large number of international students (400) from 30 different countries. Although the majority of the courses are taught in Swedish, there are a number of courses designed for English speaking students. The university has a central campus that is located south of the town center in a park-like setting. USAC students are full members of the Vaxjo International Students. organization. USAC students are paired with a .fadder., a Swedish student mentor , who helps orient them to the university, city, and surrounding area.

    Vaxjo and Sweden - Vaxjo city charter dates from 1342. The city, an important trading center as early as the 8th century during the Viking era, is located in the heart of the .Kingdom of Crystal., so-called because world famous glassworks such as Kosta Boda and Orrefors are located there. Vaxjo is also known for its high tech industry and paper and furniture manufacturing.

    The area around Vaxjo has forests, pristine lakes, hiking trails and unspoiled countryside, making it an attractive area for students who love wildlife and the outdoors. The city has many beautiful parks, churches and castles. The ruins of Kronoberg Castle remain in remembrance of a great peasant revolt as well as being the former seat of the local bishop. The 19th century Teleborg Castle still stands as well. The Smaland Museum, which displays local arts and crafts, and the Emigrants House, which commemorates the great emigration from 1850 to 1930, when 1.3 million Swedes immigrated to America are popular tourist attractions in Vaxjo.

    Copenhagen (2 hours) and Stockholm (31/2 hours) are easily accessible from Vaxjo by train.

    Courses - Students may enroll in a specific program or in a combination or individual courses. This is a sampling of what is offered and not to be considered a complete listing. Please contact the USAC central office for all available courses listings.

    Programs- Students must take all courses listed in the program chosen, courses are not combinable with individual courses or courses in other programs. However, all students can enroll in the optional- Swedish Language for International Student, regardless of program chosen. All other courses are taught in English.

    Types of Accommodation

    Student Dormitories- Dormitories are located on campus or in a student area downtown. On-campus dorms consist of single furnished rooms with individual bathrooms. Students living on the same floor share a kitchen and living room. Off campus are similar except rooms do not have internet connections and students share bathrooms.

     

    Program Fees

    2007-2008 - $4,180 per semester, $8,360 per year
    2008-2009 - same as above

    *Does not include room and board, personal expenses, textbooks and supplies, student union fee, transportation and airfare

    Loyola Fees - $1000 for semester and year- long programs, $500 for summer programs
