Individuals applying to the creative writing class must submit two writing samples along with their personal statements. These samples may be old class assignments or personal pieces that showcase the student’s abilities. The student’s name must be included on each sample.
Personal Statement
All applicants must submit a personal statement. The personal statement should be typed, double-spaced and is limited to 250 – 500 words. Students should write about their academic goals, motivation for participating in this intensive program and how they intend to prepare for this experience. When preparing the personal statement, applicants should consider addressing one or more of the following questions:
- What experiences prepared or influenced you to excel academically?
- What are the most important forces that motivate you as a student (family, community involvement, extracurricular activities, etc.)?
- Who is the single most important person in your life, and why?
- What does being socially engaged, civic-minded or spiritually-committed mean to you?
- How do you want your future contributions to the world to be represented? Draw from examples in entertainment and culture (including sports, art, drama, music, film and literature).
Recommendations
Print out two copies of the Counselor/Teacher Recommendation Form (PDF). Recommendation forms may be completed by anyone who is familiar with the student's academic performance, such as guidance counselors or teachers. The forms must be submitted by the individuals who complete them.
Transcripts
Submit current transcripts of all high-school work completed to date. If one of the recommendation forms is from a guidance counselor, please request that they send the transcripts along with the form. However, if the recommendations are from people who are unable to provide transcripts, it is the student’s responsibility to have transcripts sent directly from their high-school office.
PLEASE NOTE: Students who will complete their senior year of high-school prior to the start of summer should refer to our Summer Sessions program.
