What's New

What's new at Loyola?

Loyola is renowned for its outstanding academic reputation. In 2009, as part of its top 100 business schools rankings, BusinessWeek rated Loyola No. 1 for Undergraduate Business Specialties in Ethics. Similarly, Loyola continues to be recognized for its overall excellence in education by U.S. News & World Report, which lists us as a top national university and as a best value. The Princeton Review hails Loyola as a best college nationwide, a best school in the Midwest, and a college with a conscience.

At Loyola, we're always working to improve the quality of our students' living and learning experiences. By adding new academic programs to meet students' changing needs and by continuing to invest in enhancing our campuses, we ensure that students get the most value out of their college experience.

Academic Programs

We recently opened the new School of Communication at our Water Tower Campus, which offers undergraduate programs in advertising and public relations, communication studies, and journalism. Additionally, the School collaborates with the College of Arts and Sciences to support an interdisciplinary major in international film and new media studies. Located in the heart of the city, the School of Communication connects students to numerous job and internship opportunities with top advertising companies, media outlets, and public relations firms.

The School of Continuing and Professional Studies is offering several new academic programs this year. Students can major in clinical laboratory science and exercise physiology, and minor in emergency medical services.

Additional new academic opportunities for students include Loyola Seminar courses, which provide active and collaborative learning in a supportive environment. These one-semester, one credit-hour courses meet weekly for 50 minutes. Additional activities outside the classroom focus on community development and the integration of curricular and co-curricular learning.

Campus Facilities

Along with new academic opportunities comes the need for enhanced facilities. Students in the School of Communication take classes at a new facility located at the Water Tower Campus. Classrooms are equipped with sophisticated technology, and a new media convergence studio is scheduled to open in early 2010.

Students enrolled in fine arts programs also benefit from new facilities. The renovated Ralph Arnold Fine Arts Annex features classrooms and studios for sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, and dance, as well as presentation studios, display areas, and faculty offices. The Department of Fine and Performing Arts is housed at the Lake Shore Campus and supports programs in theatre, music, fine arts, dance, and musical theatre.

All Loyola students enjoy studying at the new Information Commons, a four-story lakeside research facility that opened at the Lake Shore Campus in early 2008. Information Commons provides study areas, state-of-the-art technology, wireless Internet connections, and a lakefront café. Our new East Quad, located outside the Information Commons, is a large green space marked with beautiful foliage and fountains.

Additional new campus facilities include the Spring Hill Residence Hall, which features apartment-style residences for upper-class students. Construction will soon begin to expand the Gentile Center into the new Center for Varsity Athletics. Scheduled for completion in early 2011, the Center will be a state-of-the art training facility and administrative area for intercollegiate athletics.
