What is a sexual assault advocate?

Sexual assault advocates at Loyola are graduate students and professional staff who have completed the 56-hour training program through Rape Victim Advocates (RVA) to become a certified Sexual Assault Medical Advocate in Illinois.  An advocate's role is to provide nonjudgmental, confidential support to student survivors of sexual assault.  Advocates at Loyola are specially trained to help students navigate options and services on campus.  Access to an advocate after an assault can play a critical role in the healing process of a survivor.

What does an advocate do?

Advocates are available to respond to student survivors of sexual assault via a hotline number to provide empathetic support and options after a sexual assault.  Loyola advocates can provide support over the phone or in person.  Available support includes:

  • Referrals to counseling and other supportive services on campus and in the community
  • Education about medical options and procedures, including evidence collection
  • Information about and referrals to legal advocacy
  • Assistance in reporting an assault to Campus Safety, if you choose
  • Support and advocacy in navigating Loyola’s conduct system, if you choose
  • Assistance for significant others and friends of sexual assault survivors

When can I call an advocate?

You have options, and you are not alone. Services are available during Wellness Center hours and on weekends.  Call the line for current hours.  Please call the non-emergency LUC Sexual Assault Advocacy Line at (773) 494-3810. If the line is currently  closed and you need to speak to someone right away, please call the Chicago Rape Crisis Hotline at (888) 293-2080.

Who can call an advocate?

Any Loyola community member can call the Loyola Sexual Assault Advocacy Line.  Survivors can call on their own, or someone can call on their behalf.  In-person advocacy support is only available to Loyola Students.
