Office of the Provost

Appointment of Todd Waller, EdD, as JFRC Director

March 18, 2021

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Todd Waller, EdD, as the next director of the John Felice Rome Center (JFRC), effective July 1, 2021.

Todd is a well-known leader in international education, bringing to Loyola University Chicago much experience and expertise in Jesuit pedagogy. He has worked in Europe and Italy for many years in study abroad programs, student life, and service learning. Therefore, he comes to Loyola with a deep understanding of global engagement. In particular, Todd has a good grasp of how transformative encounters with people, cultures, and languages enrich the educational experience.

In his role as director, Todd will have oversight of all academic and extracurricular activities at JFRC. They will include operations and facilities management at the beautiful Monte Mario campus. He will also work closely with Loyola's Office of Global and Community Engagement in strategic planning and budgeting. On the strategic planning front, Todd will help us reorganize JFRC to expand opportunities for global engagement in Europe, Africa, and Asia. He will also help us establish partnerships with foreign universities in these regions of the world. Among the goals of these partnerships is the development of COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) courses. These courses may eventually provide all Loyola students with opportunities for global learning experience. These opportunities arise by taking synchronous online classes with students from around the world. In addition, Todd will engage the dedicated group of JFRC alumni who have supported and championed the Rome Center for many years. Finally, he will join the team of devoted faculty and staff members of the JFRC community.

Todd knows JFRC well, having served there as associate dean of students from 2003 to 2009 and as dean of students from 2009 to 2010. In these capacities, he oversaw student life and counseling. He also worked closely with faculty in developing study trips in Italy, other European countries, and the Middle East. Todd left JFRC in 2010 to become the founding director of the Spring Hill College Italy Center in Bologna, where he currently manages the study abroad program. Todd’s interest in and dedication to Jesuit values at the Italy Center led him to enhance the curriculum in areas of social, economic, and environmental justice. His students engage these concerns in the European context, including partnering with immigrants and marginalized women and men in study and service.

Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, Todd holds an EdD in the Philosophy of Education from University College London, an MS in Higher Education Administration from the University of Pennsylvania, and a BS in Psychology from Seattle University.

We would also like to thank the members of the committee for the work that they accomplished in this international search:

  • Alexander Evers, Associate Professor of Classics, JFRC
  • D. Scott Hendrickson SJ, Associate Provost, Global and Community Engagement
  • Anna Clara Ionta, Senior Lecturer in Italian
  • Sheila McMullan, Executive Vice Provost
  • Paola Melotti, Business and Finance Manager, JFRC
  • Susan Ries, Associate Dean, Quinlan School of Business
  • Will Rodriguez, Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students
  • Ana Rodríguez Navas, Associate Professor of Latin American Literature and Film
  • Peter Schraeder, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences

Several years ago Todd found a friend and mentor in John Felice, the founder of JFRC in 1962. We are now pleased to welcome Todd back to JFRC as its next director.

Benvenuto, Todd!
