Dr. Strand Publishes Article on Written Dialect in Norway

A sign for a mountain lodge, cafe, and convenience store in Valdres, Norway, written entirely in the local dialect.

Thea Strand’s most recent article is titled “Tradition as Innovation: Dialect Revalorization and Maximal Orthographic Distinction in Rural Norwegian Writing.” It addresses how widespread use of non-standard dialect spellings in digital communication and marketing contexts challenges the normal sociolinguistic order and refunctionalizes the rural Valdres dialect. The article appears in the journal Multilingua, Vol. 38(1), a special issue around the theme “Re-Imagining Language Revitalization in Contemporary Europe,” guest-edited by Sabina Perrino and Andrea Leone-Pizzighella.
