Dear Friends of Arrupe College,

I am very excited and proud to be following Fr. Steve Katsouros, S.J., as the next dean of Arrupe College, and I look forward to connecting with many of you in the weeks and months ahead. As our world combats a global pandemic and our nation wrestles with racial injustices, I am lifted up by the power of Arrupe. Access to higher education is a matter of social justice, and Arrupe is succeeding at making higher education affordable, accessible, and achievable for students who have been historically underrepresented due to race or socioeconomic status. Our students and graduates are succeeding because Arrupe’s amazing faculty and staff work tirelessly to empower students to discover and develop their God-given gifts and talents, and together, we support them every step of the way.

During my first days as dean, I have met many incoming first-year students at the technology pick-up at the Water Tower Campus. While social distancing has modified our robust orientation program, we are finding new ways to build community and ensure students have the resources to succeed. As incoming students and their families picked up their laptop, calculator, and other supplies curbside, they were welcomed into the Arrupe and Loyola family with big (mask-covered) smiles, a care package with a water bottle, notebook, and tote bag. LU Wolf, Loyola’s mascot, even joined us to roll out the red carpet for our newest students. While we will continue online learning this fall semester, our commitment to supporting our students on their educational journey remains unwavering.

My goal as dean will be to strengthen our innovative model of accessible higher education without higher debt. Arrupe provides an entry point for students who would not typically be able to afford college, and the results over the first five years have been astounding. I look forward to collaborating with faculty, staff, and students to bolster the outstanding results. Partnering with you, I hope that we will be able to:

  • Work side-by-side with the broader Loyola University community to expand our recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Build new and innovative partnerships with Chicago businesses and non-profits.

  • Grow the endowment to guarantee greater access for future Arrupe students.

  • Expand and deepen the connections with other colleges and institutes across campus.

  • Collaborate and support the faculty and staff as they deliver cutting edge services and an advanced curriculum across all disciplinary areas.

We were blessed to have had Fr. Katsouros, as our founding dean and executive director during the last five years. Fr. Katsouros’s vision and leadership launched a nationally recognized model for higher education that provides an innovative, transformative education in the Jesuit tradition. His genuine care and deep connection set him apart, and our community will greatly miss him. We wish him well as he starts his next Jesuit assignment as the President and CEO of the Come to Believe Network, the New York-based organization that will replicate the Arrupe model across the country.

As I begin this new journey, please know of my gratitude for your partnership in providing transformative opportunities to the young men and women of Chicago.

Sincerely,

Fr. Tom Neitzke, S.J., EdD
Dean
