Hello! My name is Grecia Avila. I'm here to tell you about my Arrupe College experience.
How I chose my major:
My associates degree is in Liberal arts and sciences with a focus on Pre-STEM. I chose this degree because as I want to continue my education I want to Major in Biological Sciences with a Pre-Med track. Ever since I was a child, I wanted to have a career somewhere in the medical field. Today, I realize how important health is and how many low-income and minority communities lack the ability to receive healthcare or any medical resources, which is one of the reasons I want to attain a medical career devote myself to treatment for children and their families.
My plans after graduation:
After graduation I plan to continue my education and attend UIC, where I will finish my two years and attain my Bachelor’s in Biological Sciences.
Professor a new student should absolutely take a class with:
There are so many amazing professors within Arrupe. But I would highly recommend taking a philosophy class with Dr. Tarantino. I enjoyed all my classes with him. Philosophy is a great subject that you can learn so many critical thinking skills and reflect on so many speculative questions. It is a really fun course and Dr. Tarantino form of teaching and overall display of the class is remarkably effective.
Class I never expected to love:
Chemistry. I love science, but I believed Chemistry courses in college were going to be challenging. Even though it was difficult, I completely loved the way it was taught and everything I learned. Because the course was overall very interesting to me, I spent longer hours on my assignments and studying for it and I did very well in the end, which was also great.
Best thing I've done since coming to Arrupe:
Participating in an internship for Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital HERO fellowship. It was an amazing experience especially since I want to attain a career in medicine. I shadowed Neurosurgeons and Doctors and was able to observe and work on their cases. As well as being a part of their Operating Room team, learn and gather information regarding their cases of the day. I also assisted in rounds with nurse practitioners, and I was able to build my professional network and meet with different staff, nurses, and doctors.
My favorite spot on campus:
My favorite place on campus is the OSS lounge, it's a fun small space where students can study, hangout, and do other activities. I've spent a lot of time there studying and hanging out with friends.
Some surprisingly cool things about Arrupe:
The various resources and services provided to their students every day. Arrupe has many resources like advising, career assistance, workshops, clubs, programs, events, study and tutoring services, and financial assistance. Also, what is really cool is that Arrupe students have the ability uses the services, centers, libraries, and more from Loyola's main campuses.
