Kemena Brooks - Baumhart Scholar
Kemena is a Senior Project Manager for The Community Builders (“TCB”). TCB, established in 1964 is a leading nonprofit real estate developer with a focus on community investment that help neighborhoods thrive for people of all incomes. In her role, Kemena leads the development of mixed-income housing and community asset building in multiple Chicago neighborhoods and surrounding areas. Her current focus is on furthering the redevelopment of Oakwood Shores, a 100-acre transformation site in the Bronzeville neighborhood and catalytic physical investments in West Side neighborhoods impacted by low life-expectancies.
Prior to joining TCB, Kemena spent several years developing affordable and mixed-income housing for Laurel Street, a mission-driven for-profit firm based in Charlotte, NC. At Laurel Street, she contributed to the development of more than 500 mixed-income and affordable homes in Virginia and North Carolina.
Kemena holds a Master of Urban Design from the University of North Carolina Charlotte and a Bachelor of Science with a major in interior architecture from the University of North Carolina Greensboro. Kemena is an Associate Board member of the Greater Chicago YMCA. In addition, she had the honor of speaking at a UNCG interior architecture department commencement and serving on the departments advisory board.
