Donations for Jesuit High Schools Affected by Hurricane Harvey

The leadership and staff of the Jesuits U.S. Central and Southern Province are so grateful for the generosity of many who have reached out to us in the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey in Houston. The Houston Jesuit Community is safe and does not require aid, but the two Jesuit high schools, and especially their families, will need assistance.

If you would like to provide financial assistance for the long recovery after Hurricane Harvey, we encourage you to give directly to Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory and Strake Jesuit College Preparatory.

Your contribution will help meet both immediate and long-term needs, not only of the schools, but more importantly, the people and families who make up the school communities.

The presidents of the two high schools have united to share the following message:

Dear Friends of Cristo Rey Jesuit and Strake Jesuit,

Hurricane Harvey has been more catastrophic than any of us could have imagined. Thankfully, at the writing of this letter, none of our families or faculty and staff has been seriously injured on account of Harvey, and we are very grateful for this.

Both of the schools have spent the past two days assessing the needs of students as well as faculty and staff. Cristo Rey Jesuit called all of their families and Strake Jesuit sent out a survey to all of its families. As of this moment we have learned that between the two schools about 50 families have been flooded out of their homes (30 from CRJ and 20 from Strake Jesuit). I’m sure in the next hours and days we will learn of more since we have not heard from 100% of our families. These families have immediate needs for shelter, food, clothing, transportation, school supplies, school lunches, legal assistance, counseling, and other basic necessitates. No doubt there will be longer term needs as well.

As Houston deals with the impact of Hurricane Harvey on our local economy, our families will experience additional hardships. Cristo Rey, who is dependent upon the health of local businesses who fund the Corporate Work Study Program, will no doubt experience new challenges associated with funding scholarships and school programs.

Both schools sustained minor damage to facilities, but none of the damage will prevent us from opening the schools as planned on Tuesday September 5th.

How can you help? A financial donation to both schools would be very helpful and will go towards supporting our families and our schools. Click here to support the families and programs at Cristo Rey Jesuit and Click here to support the families of Strake Jesuit.

Words of gratitude are not enough. We pray to be able to come quickly to your aid when you are in need. Your continued prayers for our reliance upon God continue to be helpful.

In Christ,

Jeff Johnson, S.J.
