The Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, Dei Verbum, is often recognized as one of the foundational documents for the initiation of the ‘scientific’ discipline of biblical scholarship among Catholics. Yet beyond biblical interpretation, the Constitution is primarily concerned with the broader concept of divine revelation itself—how exactly humanity communicates with God. As such, Dei Verbum is an inherently interdisciplinary teaching, as it affirms the inseparability and mutuality of Sacred Scripture and Tradition, as well as preempting the synodal hermeneutic of dialogue between bishops, theologians, and the lay faithful—complete with all the scientific, philosophical, and pastoral gifts they bring to the discernment of God’s ongoing revelation.
On the occasion of Dei Verbum’s 60th anniversary, this edition of Nexus explores the legacy of this remarkable document across the breadth of Catholic life. And, almost seven months following the passing of Pope Francis, it aims to faithfully and imaginatively take up his call to continue to rediscover the word of God—to pick Dei Verbum off the shelf once again and appropriate it ever anew, always with the goal that the world, by hearing the gospel, “may believe, by believing it may hope, and by hoping it may love” (DV 1).
