Theme & History
Mission
Responding to the Jesuit call to stand in solidarity for and with others, the Conference on Diversity and Equity strives to ensure access and success of underrepresented students, provide professional guidance, and educate on diversity, social justice and equity.
Vision
AJCU CDE will be recognized as a leader in generating and promoting best practices regarding diversity and equity in higher education by actualizing magis to meet the challenges/demands/needs of an ever-evolving learning environment.
2014 Theme
Loyola University Chicago is thrilled to host the 2014 AJCU Conference on Diversity and Equity (CDE). The theme this year is focused on faith, justice, and action. With these shared values present in our various Jesuit institutions, each day will be guided by one of the three components of the theme. Programs and speakers will engage staff, faculty, and students in rich conversation and call participants to both reflect on the current climate of multicultural affairs and diversity work, while considering how these three areas culminate in Advancing the Movement to meet the needs of our transforming student populations.
History
Founded in 1981, the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) established the Conference on Multicultural Affairs (CMA) to provide a forum for diversity/multicultural affairs professionals and students from Jesuit universities and colleges across the United States to share information relative to students of color.
CDE is hosted annually on the campus of an AJCU member institution. The summer conference brings together colleagues of all areas of campus to discuss the broad range of issues that significantly impact the education of students of color in Jesuit institutions of higher education. In so doing, we endeavor to assist Jesuit institutions to identify those issues that are of the most immediate concern to their constituencies and develop strategies to effectively address those issues.
Regions
The CDE is composed of four regions: Northeastern, Southerwestern, Midwestern, and Western. Each region has a representative, and each Jesuit college or university in the respective region has a campus representative.
2014 CDE Host & Planning Committee
Loyola University Chicago, Chicago’s premier Jesuit Catholic University, is excited to host the 2014 AJCU Conference on Diversity and Equity (CDE). Known as the “Windy City” and for its spectacular skyline, Chicago is the third largest city in the United States and home to almost 3 million residents. Chicago’s diversity is reflected in the people, neighborhoods, architecture, music, and of course the restaurants. Although Chicago’s residents are very diverse, they have one thing in common: movement. From the El to the buses and trains to people walking and rolling down Michigan Avenue; the city is constantly moving and shifting. Whether the movement is physical or ideological, Chicago is a city where people and ideas are constantly evolving making it the perfect setting for the Conference on Diversity and Equity in 2014.
Below you will find the 2014 Planning Committee, which consists of Student Development professionals from Loyola.
