First Step

Your first step in pursuing an academic internship is contacting the internship coordinator in your major. They will be able to tell you when the department offers academic internship courses, as well as what steps you may need to take to enroll, including application deadlines and internship requirements. Learn more.

Academic Internship Criteria

The internship experience must be an extension of the classroom: a learning experience applying the knowledge gained in the classroom. For more information on what is required for an internship, please use this Internship Criteria guide.

Securing an Internship

The Career Development Center offers a number of services to help you connect with employers and locate opportunities. After you've learned about what kinds of internship experiences are required for your academic internship course, visit the Career Development Center, or Quinlan's Career Services, to speak with a career advisor about your internship search.

Seeking an Internship

We encourage you to conduct a broad search to find a great academic internship position. Below are some resources to consider using in your search. Not every organization posts their positions on 3rd party sites, so if you have a specific site in mind, be sure to explore their website directly!

Seeking a Virtual/Remote Internship

Virtual internships are internships that are done online or remotely anytime of the year. This allows you to work on a global scale but stay local. You are placed with a company and report to a supervisor. You are in regular contact with that supervisor/team via virtual methods such as a video call, phone call, email and instant messenger. For more information regarding best practices here is a Virtual Internship Guide.

Seeking Micro-Internships

When you are launching your career, Micro-Internships provide a tremendous opportunity. Not only can you explore different career paths and work on interesting assignments, you can also demonstrate your abilities to potential employers while building your professional portfolio and network. Beyond that, your academic experience will improve as you apply what is taught in the classroom to the real world (and vice versa). Oh, did we forget to mention that you get paid for all of this?
