LUROP Fellowship Student Survey Results

Students who conduct mentored research through a LUROP Fellowship, known as LUROP Fellows, are surveyed after their research experience in order to assess LUROP's impact. Here are some key results of those surveys. After each set of highlighted results, you can find links to the full reports for each survey, which include much more detailed information.

Academic Year 2013-2014 LUROP fellows were asked to comment on the quality of their research experience. Here are some of their responses.

• “I gained a vast amount of knowledge regarding the research process. I was involved in all steps of the process, and thus have an infinitely better understanding of what it means to do research. This is very important for my future goal of going to graduate school.”
• “Research has given me a great insight into the scientific process. It has allowed me to be engaged in hands-on, cutting edge projects that can have a real impact in the world someday.”
• “I was able to learn how the scientific community actually worked. Going to conferences, learning about grant proposals, and DOING the research helped give me an incredible experience many are not fortunate to have. This has been a wonderful academic year for me at Loyola.”
• “The mentoring I received really contributed to my personal sense of self and allowed me to become a more confident person. Although I do not plan on doing research in the future, the opportunity opened up my eyes to the world of research and allowed me to develop skills.”
• “The experience I gained from this research links directly to my career choice of teaching. I can carry on a lot of what I learned through this research and apply it to my future job. This research has helped develop my speaking and communicating skills, which are important in my daily life as well as for my future occupation.”
• “My research experience helped me to be able to take all that I have learned through books and class and be able to actually practice it in a real world setting. I felt like I learned much more through actively researching than by passively being taught what it is like to work in my field.”
• “I have learned a lot about my research topic and think that I have grown a lot as a person. Research seemed so inaccessible to me before I began working in a lab-as if only absolutely brilliant people worked in labs and I couldn’t do it. I’ve learned that research is certainly not an easy thing to do, but it isn’t impossible like I seemed to think it was before. This has given me more confidence and has encouraged me to apply to grad school in the fall.”
• “I feel that not only has my knowledge of research increased, I have learned a number of skills that have helped me in a number of fields. The critical thinking skills, presentation skills, communication and more have proven to be extraordinarily helpful throughout my studies at Loyola.”

• “I believe that throughout my research experience here at Loyola I have gained a profound knowledge in my specific area of study both in the practical and applicable terms.”
• “Rather than just learning theories in class, research allows me to reach a deeper understanding of how this knowledge can be applicable to the real world. While researching, I realize that we as a society owe a lot to the hard work of researchers.”
• “Being part of the WISER program allowed me to put my foot into the door and be confident to explore all my options to graduate school and a future career. I met some amazing people that I still work with in our lab, they’ve become friends and role models.”
• “The Provost Fellowship gave me a more formal opportunity to explore my research—I am able to formally present my work and participate in LUROP sponsored workshops that furthered my ability to comb through research databases.”
• “The Research Mentoring Program has really helped me by exposing me to an aspect of science that I am not used to seeing during class.”

• “My LUROP fellowship was a very valuable learning experience generally, learning about the actual process of doing research and the obstacles you have to work around along the way. I also learned a lot about myself and the lab I work in.”
• “The biggest benefit has been gaining an understanding of what being in a research environment is really like. I feel like I have gotten a small taste of what to expect if I go to graduate school.”
• “This was a great opportunity for me to gain leadership and communication skills, in which I have noticed a great improvement for myself.”
• “I have gained critical thinking, problem solving, and organizational skills. I have learned to work collaboratively and to communicate with many people to reach an end goal in addition to better clarifying what my career goals are.”

• “I was able to apply the theoretical practices I have learned through my various courses here at Loyola and put them to use. I was also able to gain a deeper understanding in my field of interest”
• “I studied my topic to a depth which I have never done before. I am comfortable saying that I am very well informed about my topic. I learned what will be required of me when I enter graduate school”
