Gay Landstrom, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE, is a leader with a mission. She has used her passion for service, her drive to inspire, and her affinity for driving progress across an organization to create innovative, effective, and highly efficient results. Today, she serves as senior vice president and chief nursing officer at Trinity Health, one of the largest multi-institutional Catholic health care delivery systems in the nation, with 120 continuing care locations, more than 120,000 employees, and 5,300 physicians. Based in Livonia, Michigan, Trinity Health serves diverse communities that include more than 30 million people across 22 states.
Dr. Landstrom embraces Trinity Health’s commitment to people who are poor and underserved in their communities, with a focus on the country's aging population. Under her direction, Trinity Health advances its mission as a people-centered health system that values the highest levels of quality and exceptional experiences across the care continuum.
As chief nursing officer, Dr. Landstrom is charged with maintaining clinical and patient-care standards, as well as formulating and implementing new nursing strategies. This responsibility calls upon her extensive knowledge of nursing procedures, staff rules, and patient policies, which she gained through a number of roles. Prior to her current position, Dr. Landstrom was chief nursing officer at Trinity Health for the West/Midwest Division until 2014 when it merged with Catholic Health East. Before that, she was vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer at Mercy Health Partners in Muskegon, Michigan. She also served from 2009 until 2016 as commissioner of the State of Michigan Certificate of Need Commission.
In 2014, she began serving as chief nursing officer for Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health Care System in New Hampshire before moving to become interim CEO of Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center, an affiliate of Dartmouth-Hitchcock. Prior to returning to Trinity Health, she served as system chief nursing officer for Ascension St. John Providence Health System and chief nursing officer for Ascension Michigan hospitals.
A published author, Dr. Landstrom has written numerous research papers and is active on the board of the Midwest Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives and is a member of the AvaSure Nursing Advisory Board.
She holds a PhD in nursing from the University of Michigan–Rackham Graduate School, a Master of Science in Nursing Administration from the University of Illinois at Chicago, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Rush University—where she was a member of Sigma Theta Tau—and a degree in biology and biological sciences from Wheaton College.
