Nathaniel Howse Jr.

Judge Nathaniel Howse is a proud graduate of both the Loyola University Chicago School of Law and the Loyola University Chicago College of Arts and Sciences. The education he received at Loyola has led to a decades-long career as one of Cook County’s most prominent judges.

In 2009, the Illinois Supreme Court assigned Judge Howse to serve as a justice on the Illinois Appellate Court, and in 2012, he was elected to a 10-year term on the Appellate Court. Prior to this current appointment, in 1998, he was elected as a judge of the circuit court of Cook County.

Before holding these titles, Judge Howse was in private practice for 22 years. During this period, he represented several high-profile clients in cases that primarily involved voting rights and employee discrimination. His clients have been represented in the circuit court of Cook County, the Illinois Appellate Court, the Illinois Supreme Court, the federal district court, and the Seventh Court of Appeals.

Judge Howse is a recipient of the Chicago Bar Association’s most prestigious award, the Justice John Paul Stevens Award. This honor “recognizes lawyers and judges who have demonstrated outstanding character and commitment to community throughout their careers.” Judge Howse has also received the William R. Ming award from the Cook County Bar Association for his contributions to civil rights, and the Leadership and Service Award and Norman C. Amaker Award of Excellence from Loyola University Chicago School of Law.

He is a former member of the board of directors of Project L.E.A.P., a national organization that helps students become dedicated leaders, as well as a former chair of the Chicago Bar Association’s Election Law Committee. He has spoken and presented for the Illinois Judicial Council, Chicago Bar Association, Black Women Lawyers Association, and more.

Born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Judge Howse has been a Chicago resident since he was seven years old. His parents moved his family to the city as a part of the Great Migration. Judge Howse’s mother was a Chicago Public Schools teacher, and his father worked full-time while going to law school at night. Prior to his time at Loyola, Judge Howse graduated from John Marshall Harlan High School.
