Loyola Neighborhood News: Lake Shore Campus - V3, I1

Hard hats, trucks, bulldozers, and diggers make the campus a noisy, dusty mess while Loyola continues to redevelop the Lake Shore Campus in accordance with the campus master plan of 2004.  When completed, the development projects will result in sustainable buildings, new and purposeful facilities, and important amenities to support the academic, social and residential needs of campus-community.

These construction projects have a deeper meaning in today’s struggling economy where jobs are scarce and new construction even scarcer.  In the last five years and at a cost of $192 million, Loyola has created approximately 143 full time equivalents each year totalling 738 union construction jobs for Chicago-area workers.

Currently, the university has three projects underway:  Cuneo Hall (former Damen Hall site), Alumni Gym/Gentile Center, and Halas Fitness Center. 

Cuneo Hall is the five-story, LEED Certified building slated to replace the former ten-story Damen Hall.  In scale with the adjacent Cudahy Science and Dumbach Hall buildings, Cuneo is designed to re-capture the classrooms lost from Damen Hall and will be open in Spring 2012. 

Alumni Gym has been demolished to make way for a new student union as part of the Reimagine Campaign. Gentile Center’s interior renovation will redesign the gym into a NCAA-class arena with fixed seating opening in November of this year.

Halas Gym, which has been closed for the summer due to interior renovations, will re-open Saturday, August 27th
