Mullady Theatre to Close Curtains After Exciting Season

Loyola Neighborhood News: Lake Shore Campus - V3, I3

The Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Loyola University Chicago is excited to announce a theatre season focusing on stories and storytellers, opening with Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods, followed by Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, and closing with the iconic Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire.

The upcoming 2011-2012 season will also be met with nostalgia and fond memories, as it is the last theatre season that will take place exclusively in Kathleen Mullady Theatre. The building has served as the primary performance space on campus since it was built in 1968, the same year that the Department of Theatre was first established.

Most performances will move to a brand new theatre and studio space in the Mundelein Center for the Fine and Performing Arts, slated to open in August 2012. For this one last season, audience members can enjoy Mullady’s intimate proscenium and relive cherished memories as this chapter in the University’s history closes.

Jennie Martin, Director of Public Programming for the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, explained the upcoming changes.

“As a graduate of Loyola University and someone who spent countless hours in the Mullady Theatre, this year is bittersweet,” said Martin. “There is so much excitement in a new theatre space yet so many memories to say goodbye to.”

Before the Mullady theatre closes its curtains for one final time, all are invited to visit the iconic and long-standing auditorium for a series of exciting performances.

Beginning the season is the Sondheim classic Into the Woods, a colorful musical that interweaves the plots of several traditional fairy tales, such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and more. However, these classic stories don’t stay traditional for long—whether playful or sinister, these equally inventive story lines make the audience question how we think of fairy tales in modern terms. Into the Woods opens on Friday, November 4 and runs Thursdays through Sundays until the 13th. Tickets are available now through the Box Office.

The season will then follow up with Shakespeare's “comedy” of ethics in Measure for Measure. The play both farcically and functionally presents issues of truth, justice, mercy, and virtue. Measure for Measure is scheduled to open in mid-February.

The Department of Fine and Performing arts will close their season with the iconic Tennessee Williams' AStreetcar Named Desire, a heated drama that is slated for open in April of 2012.
