Loyola Neighborhood News: Lake Shore Campus - V3, I1

In the coming weeks, Loyola will welcome a little more than 4,100 student residents to the Rogers Park and Edgewater communities. As you are very much aware, the arrival of new students and the return of upper-class students bring with it both the excitement and energy of a new academic year as well as the well-known headaches of getting them all moved-in during a short period of time.  Loyola will continue to use the move-in plan that was successfully adopted in 2004, and hopefully, the process is even easier on the neighborhood. In addition to the input of Loyola staff and parents, the advice of the Aldermen, the Chicago Police, the Commissioner of Streets and Sanitation, the Office of Emergency Management and Communication (OEMC), and the Lakeshore Campus Advisory Council, and neighborhood leaders was sought to streamline the move-in process.

Due to the increased student population and construction, move-in for all students will span six days, August 21st, 23-25th, 27 and 28th. There will be no check-ins allowed on Friday, August 26 to allow students to participate in First-Year Convocation. Each student has received a move-in time slot based on either the first letter of their last name or the floor to which they moving in to. Each parent has received a color-coded placard to display in their car window in order to help us facilitate traffic flow. During August 24th and 25th, Loyola Avenue will be a one-way westbound. Students moving into Mertz Hall (1125 W. Loyola) will unload their cars on the paved parkway adjacent to the track and field and will use carts to carry items to the building through the south entrance. Parking on Loyola Avenue will be used for unloading cars bound for Campion Hall.

How will all of this affect campus neighbors? As stated above, the Department of Residence Life requested that the city restrict parking as follows:

Sunday, August 21 | 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Winthrop Avenue from W. Sheridan to Rosemont (both sides)
Rosemont Avenue between Winthrop and Kenmore (south side only)

Tuesday, August 23 | 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Winthrop Avenue from W. Sheridan to Rosemont (both sides)
Loyola Avenue from Winthrop to Sheridan Road (both sides)
Loyola Avenue from Winthrop to the lake (both sides)

Wednesday, August 24 and Thursday, August 25 | 6:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Winthrop Avenue from W. Sheridan to Rosemont (both sides)
Rosemont Avenue between Winthrop and Kenmore (south side only)
Loyola Avenue from Winthrop to Sheridan Road (both sides)
*Loyola Avenue will be a temporary one-way westbound

Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28 | 11:00 A.M.—5:00 P.M. 
Winthrop Avenue from Rosemont to Granville (both sides)
Kenmore Avenue from Rosemont to W. Sheridan Road (both sides)
Loyola Avenue from the lake to Winthrop Avenue (both side)

South of West Sheridan Road, be aware that much of the move-in activity will take place in the alley between Winthrop and Kenmore between Sheridan and Rosemont. Unfortunately, due to the city’s new Streets and Sanitation procedure, neighbors whose cars are displaced will be towed by the City of Chicago at the owner’s expense.

A special attention to no-parking areas around Loyola University is also requested, especially on Loyola, Albion, Arthur, Northshore, Columbia, Wayne, Lakewood, Kenmore, and Winthrop.  If students who live in off-campus apartments illegally park their cars, such as in tow-zones, blocking fire hydrants, or obstructing driveways and alleys, they will face the same consequences as anyone else.

Finally, Loyola will host a special fireworks celebration on Saturday, September 3rd at 9:00 PM to mark the new academic year.  Dubbed the “New Year’s Festival,” neighbors can plan to come, bring a chair  and their family to enjoy the show from Halas Field (to the south of the Gentile/Norville Center for Inter-Collegiate Athletics).
