Update on JFRC and Fall 2021 Study Abroad

June 14, 2021

Dear Loyolans,

Travel abroad to Rome is returning this fall, as students are again welcome to study at the John Felice Rome Center (JFRC). The Office of Global and Community Engagement is pleased that current students and Rome Start students are able to experience the rich cultural immersion the JFRC has offered students over many generations.

We remain confident that students will have a meaningful and impactful experience this fall, taking into account protocols that have been implemented to ensure the continued health and safety of our community in Rome. A full array of classes, on-site visits in and around Rome, and excursions to the beautiful cities and cultural heritage sites of Italy have been planned.

The decision to open our campus in Rome has been informed with input and insight from local Italian and global public health experts, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Loyola University Chicago and JFRC leadership, and the University’s Health Care Advisory Working Group. While challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic have not completely disappeared, the dedicated faculty and staff of the JFRC will now be able to provide and maintain a safe environment for our students. To promote protective health and safety standards, students are required to be fully vaccinated upon arriving in Rome, and all Loyola and Italian protocols and guidelines related to the pandemic will be enforced.

Students are encouraged to apply for study abroad at the JFRC for both the fall 2021 and spring 2022 semesters. For more information, please contact rome@LUC.edu. All students currently admitted for the fall 2021 semester in Rome will receive detailed information soon on registration and orientation as they prepare to make their travel plans.

The reopening of our campus in Rome provides students an opportunity to enrich their undergraduate career with an exciting adventure in study abroad. The JFRC has been an important part of the Loyola experience for almost 60 years. It will now continue to offer students an international experience in global engagement, a hallmark of Loyola’s Jesuit education.
