Updates on the Academic Calendar, Placement-Based Courses, and Engaged Learning
Dear Faculty and Staff,
The COVID-19 health situation has necessitated changes in scheduling and delivery of academics to our students. Below are a number of updates relevant to shifting on-campus classes to an online format. These include:
Three key changes to the Spring 2020 academic calendar:
- The deadline for withdrawing with a grade of W has been moved to 5 p.m. on Monday, March 30. This change applies to all courses whose original deadline was 5 p.m. on Monday, March 23.
- The deadline for entering midterm grades and academic alerts has been extended. The midterm grade rosters will remain open until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24.
- Fall 2020 registration for undergraduates will begin on Monday, April 6. The updated schedule will soon be available on the Fall 2020 Registration Access Schedule webpage.
Loyola’s intention is to offer summer school courses as scheduled. The determination of whether these courses will be online or on-campus will be made when we have more information about the status of the public health situation.
Placement-based courses (Clinicals, Internships, Service-learning, Research, and Fieldwork)
The following guidelines will assist in advising your students currently participating in clinicals, internships, and other placement-based courses, such as service-learning, research, and fieldwork.
- If placement-based sites are open and running, and students will still be in the Chicago-area, placements can proceed as usual. Academic units may also make decisions regarding students’ participation in these learning activities.
- If placement sites are open but students are being sent home from campus, faculty are encouraged to move to alternative activities/assessments as posted on the Academic Continuity/Engaged Learning webpage. Alternatively, faculty can make the decision that work already completed by students satisfies the requirements for credit. Faculty should be flexible in their expectations and give high priority to seniors completing their degree requirements in the Spring 2020 semester.
- If placement sites have been closed, faculty are encouraged to move to alternative activities/assessments as posted on the Academic Continuity/Engaged Learning webpage. Alternatively, faculty can make the decision that work already completed by students satisfies the requirements for credit. Faculty should be flexible in their expectations and give high priority to seniors completing their degree requirements in the Spring 2020 semester.
Engaged Learning Courses (undergraduate requirement)
If a student successfully completes an Engaged Learning course, regardless of hours accumulated due to interruption from COVID-19, then that student will receive Engaged Learning (EL) credit. We know that faculty may want to continue to maximize the experiential component of their EL course, if it is possible to do so. When Engaged Learning courses are shifted to an online format, the experiential component may be shortened or moved to project-based work.
