Dr. Stemen Appointed to Illinois Sentencing Commission
Dr. Donald Stemen, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology, was appointed on June 17, 2016, to the Illinois Sentencing Policy Advisory Council (SPAC). SPAC is comprised of Illinois legislators, state and local criminal justice practitioners and policy makers, and statutorily requires one member to be “a criminal justice academic researcher,” which is the position assumed by Dr. Stemen. SPAC’s role is to review sentencing policies and practices and examine how these policies and practices impact the criminal justice system. Dr. Stemen was unanimously approved by SPAC members to serve based on his extensive experience, and national reputation, in carrying out rigorous and sophisticated research on sentencing and correctional practices and policies.
