Curriculum-Specific Professional Development
For the past fifteen years, Loyola CSME has provided professional development sessions to support science teachers’ use of the Science Education Public Understanding Program (SEPUP) curriculum for middle grades science. More recently, Loyola CSME offers support for teachers using the Full Options Science System (FOSS) elementary science curriculum in grades K-5. Summer and academic year sessions support implementation of these curricula over the entire school year.
Professional Development Leaders (PDL) program
Expert teacher leaders from schools around Chicago are part of a cohort of SEPUP and FOSS professional development leaders (PDLs). PDLs are highly-qualified middle grades and elementary science teachers, who draw on their years of valuable classroom experience to train teachers in Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Archdiocese in the use of high quality science curricula. With guidance and training from CSME science instructional coaches, these PDL teachers facilitate PD sessions attended by hundreds of Chicago area teachers and engage in continued professional growth through semi-annual PDL Academies. The work of the PDL cohort is supported by funding from the Polk Bros. Foundation and the Illinois Board of Higher Education.
