Sarah Thorngate

Sarah is a Ph.D. student in sociology at Loyola University Chicago. In addition to being a graduate student, Sarah works as an academic librarian at Northwestern University. Before coming to Loyola, she earned a B.A. in music, religion, and English from Saint Olaf College and an MLIS from the University of Illinois. Sarah's research lies at the intersections of sociology and academic librarianship. Broadly speaking, her interests are in education inequality, feminized labor, and the power dynamics surrounding information access and use. Her current projects include a study of how social class shapes undergraduates' choice of major, an analysis of racial-equity oriented policy change in an urban public school district, and an investigation of the causes and consequences of labor invisibility in librarianship. Outside of work and school, Sarah is an active amateur violinist, playing with a community orchestra in Chicago and with her six siblings in their family band.
