About

Toranika (Tah_ruh_nee_kuh) Washington, recent Chicago transplant via Miami, Florida, interdisciplinary artist, choreographer, intimacy director, somatic educator, business owner, and healer. Toranika gets excited about sharing the value of movement with others and creating collaborative spaces for understanding how bodies communicate and make an impact in un/familiar spaces.

She holds a M.F.A. in Choreography, M.A. in Teaching & Learning, and a B.A. in Radio & Television Broadcasting. She is certified in Kemetic Yoga RYT-200 and a Certified Movement Analyst from the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies, New York. Her Laban/Bartenieff training migrated from New York, to the University of Maryland, and landed at Agape in Koolskamp, Belgium. Toranika is the CEO of Somatic Soul Food – Movement Consulting, a private practice where she offers individual and group sessions for relieving stress, anxiety, self-care treatments, and strategies for maneuvering life’s uncertainties.

In Florida, Toranika served on faculty at New World School the Arts College, Miami City Ballet, University of Miami, and Broward College. In Chicago, she teaches Laban Movement Analysis and contact improvisation at DePaul University, and she is an Intimacy Director for stage productions and the Chair of DePaul’s Certificate in Theatrical and Cinematic Intimacy Committee.
