About

Steven Betancourt is the Director of Campus Ministry at Loyola University Chicago. He leads a dynamic team serving the Loyola community through worship, reflection, and service. In this role, he works with all Faith Traditions under the Campus Ministry umbrella (Catholic, Protestant, Hindu, Jewish, and Muslim), partnering with each to engage students in a deeper experience of faith in their lives. Steven oversees the staff and programs for Catholic Life at the university, including Madonna della Strada Chapel. He is the Director of Music for the chapel, leads the Schola Cantorum, teaches applied organ, and is the organist for all liturgies in the chapel. Steven directs the weekly Evening Prayer in the style of TaizĂ© and coordinates the student lead Evening Ensemble THE9. He is the primary resource to campus partners for liturgical music needs.

Steven is a former Dean of the Chicago Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Originally from Norwalk, California, Steven earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Whittier College in California, studying with Dr. Frances Nobert and David McVey. He earned his Master of Music in Organ Performance & Church Music, from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, in Bloomington, Indiana, studying with Dr. Larry Smith, Dr. Carla Edwards and Dr. Marilyn Keiser.

Steven’s interests include running, French language and culture, exploring the great city of Chicago, and dogs (especially Boston Terriers).
