Merari currently serves as a LUCES scholar for the 2017-18 academic year to continue enriching the program that serves women of color. From the Logan Square/Avondale/Northwest side of the city of Chicago, Merari Flores is currently completing her Bachelors of Science in Psychology. Merari works with the Logan Square Neighborhood Association as a Youth Organizer for the Community Wellness team that she helped create and works closely with the youth of Chicago by helping them understand mental wellness, coping mechanisms as well as helping organize events concerning gentrification in her neighborhood.

Merari transferred into Loyola in the beginning of her Junior year and wanted to find a space where women of color can advocate for each other. Walking into that first LUCES meeting has helped solidify her passion for uplifting other women of color as they find their places in higher education. She plans to help other women of color understand how validated they are in spaces that were not necessarily created for them and how thriving with a never-ending fire will only lead to greater opportunities. When she’s not helping to uplift her communities, you can find her relaxing with a book in the Information Commons while watching the lake, rewatching Mad Men for the millionth time or making some extravagant DIY project from her Pinterest board.
