Religion

As a community that values faith and religion, participants in the roundtables shared that we need to continue to create spaces where all individuals feel safe to practice their faith across all campuses, whether it means celebrating religious holidays and spaces for religious practice. Specific actions identified by participants were to create more spaces to connect with a variety of religious faiths, including celebrations, and clear messaging around the University’s Catholic identity.

Challenges Based on Lived Experiences

  • Disparity in recognition of (and ability to accommodate) religious holidays (e.g., SAGA funding cycles are limited)
  • Lack of spaces across all campuses (prayer space, affinity spaces, virtual spaces for remote students)

Positive Engagement to Build Upon

  • Conversations are happening
  • Recognition of different religious faiths and traditions (but more diverse programming would be beneficial)
  • Strong foundation from Campus Ministry

Actions for Further Progress

Institution Level

  • Create more opportunities for engaging in different faith traditions
  • Foster transparency about Catholic identity and possibility/limitations of recognition of other faith traditions and beliefs
  • Celebrate different faiths (not just when mourning and in difficult times)

Community Level

  • Allow for religious accommodation within departments
  • Centralize system for religious support (intentional)
  • Create more opportunities for us to learn about different faith identities

Individual Level

  • Focus on advocacy efforts (for yourself and for others)
