Learning and Development

HumanServicesEDU.org identifies the term cultural competence to describe a set of skills, values and principles that acknowledge, respect and work towards optimal interactions between the individual and the various cultural and ethnic groups that an individual might come in contact with.  They go on to describe the key components for a high degree of cultural competency as:

Attitude

Knowledge

Skills

There is no ‘finish line’ in the cultural competency journey.  Time progresses.  Terms and definitions evolve. Points of reference change.  Loyola University Chicago is committed to offering a variety of learning and development opportunities as we all strive to raise awareness of our own biases, keep a positive attitude around the cultural competency journey, expand our knowledge of self, as well as other communities and cultures, and increase our skills.

Emerge – Faculty and Staff

EMERGE is a series of in-person training programs and resources curated by the Human Resources Department, provided at no cost to participants, to enhance personal and professional development for all faculty and staff members.

In-person, diversity-related workshops include Appreciating Diversity, Share the Dream: Undocumented Student Ally Training, and Safe Space Training. 

Skillsoft- Faculty and Staff

Free on-demand Business Skills courses available online or via the Skillsoft Learning App. With approximately 200 available courses, we encourage faculty and staff to utilize this resource for both their own learning and to develop their teams. 

Diversity-related Skillsoft courses include Managing Diversity, Using Communication Strategies to Bridge Cultural Divides, Overcoming Unconscious Bias in the Workplace, Gender and Leadership, Managing Multigenerational Employees, Managing Employee Performance and many more.  

HoonuitFaculty, Staff, and Students

Diverse backgrounds (i.e. cultural experiences) and learning styles have a direct impact on scholarship, culture, and sociological developments amongst peers in both the classroom and/or workplace. Hoonuit (pronounced:who knew it) offers complimentary on-demand courses exploring best practices regarding how to support diverse learners in the classroom and workplace. 

Diversity-related courses found in the Instructional Strategies module include topics such as Differentiated Instruction, Helping Students with Learning Disabilities Succeed in the Classroom, Supporting Diverse Learners and more.

Diversity-related courses found in the Professional Responsibilities/Communication module include Communications Between Latino and Majority: Cultural Perspectives for Increased Success, Diversity & Inclusion, Leadership Styles and more.
