Alexis Garcia

Alexis Garcia attended the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she earned her bachelor's degree in human development and Learning with a minor in Psychology. During the summer, she worked as a paraprofessional at an early intervention summer school for preschool-aged students. This experience led her to work her first full-time school year as a paraprofessional in a special needs classroom while completing her fourth year of studies. What drew Alexis to this fellowship was the opportunity to support students who see themselves in her. As she worked with students and families who share her cultural background, she recognized the importance of having someone who can connect not only with the students but also with their families. Alexis believes that family involvement is crucial for the support and growth of students. To foster this, she emphasizes the need to break down barriers so that families feel seen and that they belong. After graduation, Alexis hopes to work in an elementary or middle school where she can give back to her community. She aims to bridge the gap for bicultural and multilingual students with autism, developmental, or behavioral disorders, ensuring they receive proper support and are valued as important members of the team supporting their children.
