BA/MEd Five-Year Degree in Chemistry and Secondary Education

Students are enrolled in the College of Arts & Science for the first 4 years, working to complete the requirements for a BA degree in the STEM subject area of Chemistry as well pre-requisites for Loyola’s Graduate Teacher Preparation program. Students may begin the required sequence of classes for the MEd starting in their junior or senior year. They will also formally apply to the School of Education prior to their 5th year. The remainder of required education courses, including student teaching, are completed in the 5th year. Please note that the MEd includes at least one summer session. Depending on your financial aid package, it is possible to get summer aid for the graduate courses.
Students work under the guidance of the Education Senior Academic Advisor (at SOEAdvising@luc.edu), to outline a specific course of study to fulfill all requirements. The timing of the education courses in the 4th and 5th years can vary depending on each student’s particular needs. The number of courses taken each term can vary depending on the plan developed.
A cumulative and major GPA of 3.0 or better is required to be admitted to the program.
In addition, the student must pass the Illinois State Board of Education Test of Academic Proficiency prior to beginning the education courses and pass the Chemistry Content exam as admission for the MEd.

Official Transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate work
Transcripts must show a GPA of at least a 3.0.
- In exceptional cases, applicants whose undergraduate GPA is below 3.0 may be admitted. Each program area gives meaningful consideration to the applicant's graduate GPA, recommendations, professional experience and reasons for pursuing a graduate program, as well as to the diversity of the student body.
One Letter of Recommendation
- Recommenders and References may be academic or professional in nature.
- Current studetns and alumnae of Loyola University Chicago must seek a letter of recommendation from someone other than the Teaching, Learning, and Leading with Schools and Communities (TLLSC) program advisor.
A Personal Statement of 2-3 pages double-space (should address the following topics):
- Academic and and professional background and experience
- Plans and goals for the masters in Education - Secondary Education program and upon completion of graduate work
- Your perspective on social justice as it applies to preparing to be a teacher
- Why you are a good fit for Loyola University Chicago's Teaching, Learning & Leading with Schools and Communities program
- Illinois Content Area Exam
- Illinois Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP) or ACE/SAT scores
- For minimum ACT/SAT scores, see the Illinois Basic Skills Testing Requirement
- Passing scores must be achieved prior to beginning TLLSC Sequence 5
