Grant Writing and Fundraising Summer Externships for Humanities PhD Students

Are you interested in Grant Writing and Fundraising? Do you want to learn how your Humanities PhD skills can be applied to these areas? Do you want to gain experience to grow your skills and connections for a potential career in these areas?

With grant funding from the Council of Graduate Schools, the Graduate School at Loyola University Chicago is sponsoring:  

2023 Paid Grant Writing and Fundraising Summer Externships for Humanities PhD Students

During the first four weeks of the summer (May 15 – June 15, 2023), Humanities PhD students will gain valuable, hands-on experience in externship placements in multiple Loyola University Chicago offices engaged in fundraising and grant writing.

Benefits of participation include:

  • Opportunity to meet staff and to learn more about their work and their portfolio of responsibilities
  • Exposure to some of the commonly used technology
  • Understanding of common challenges and pitfalls in this work
  • Gain ideas for further building experience or skill set
  • Participate in professional organizations, meetings, and training opportunities
  • Benefit from opportunity to contribute to processes/work flow

Program Details

  • May 15 – June 15, 2023
  • 3-5 participants will be selected
  • $3,000 fellowship stipend
  • 20 hours per week for four weeks
  • Externship hosts will be consulted on the selection and placement of applicants to ensure best fit

Participation Requirements

  • A PhD student in a Humanities program (English, History, Philosophy, Theology) (advanced doctoral status preferred but not required)
  • Attendance at one or more sessions of the Graduate School’s NONPROFIT GRANT WRITING: Four Session Virtual Workshop Series for Graduate Students
  • Willingness to sign a non-disclosure agreement
  • May not be in receipt of other institutional funding from the university during the same four-week period, such as research assistant position, other fellowships, or paid hourly employment by the university
