University Travel Restrictions and Guidance on Holiday Travel
December 15, 2020
Dear Faculty and Staff,
As the number of positive COVID-19 cases continues to increase across the City of Chicago, State of Illinois, and country, we want to remind you of Loyola University Chicago’s current travel restrictions and the University’s holiday travel recommendations ahead of the upcoming break.
To ensure the health, safety, and well-being of our community, all University-sponsored travel remains prohibited, with only rare exceptions granted for essential travel. Academic affairs–related exceptions to this prohibition on University-sponsored travel must be approved by academic leadership in the department, college, or school, as well as the Office of the Provost; all other essential travel exception requests must be approved by the Office of the President. For more information, please visit LUC.edu/coronavirus/travelpolicy/.
Out of an abundance of care and concern for our wider community, nation, and world and in alignment with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recommendations, we also continue to advise Loyola students, faculty, and staff to either refrain from or limit non-essential personal travel if feasible this holiday season. The best way to protect yourself and others is to stay home and celebrate with your immediate household or celebrate virtually.
If you choose to gather with others during the holidays, we ask that you follow the CDC’s Holiday Celebrations recommendations—stay in small groups, practice social distancing, wear masks, and gather outdoors if possible. Additionally, if holiday travel is necessary, CDC has information on travel considerations that can help you take measures to protect yourself and others. Compliance with Chicago’s Emergency Travel Order, which is regularly updated, is required if traveling for the holidays (or at any other time) to or from designated states with a significant degree of community-wide spread of COVID-19.
We recognize that the holidays look a little different this year, and for some this may be disheartening. We encourage to you to stay connected virtually with friends and family and explore mental health and wellness resources as needed. You can seek additional emotional, financial, family, and/or legal support during these stressful and challenging times at no cost by leveraging Loyola’s recently-expanded partnership with Perspectives. Additionally, the Illinois Department of Health Services also offers several support hotlines for those coping with stress due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As Loyolans for and with others, we can all do our part to slow the spread of COVID-19 and keep one another safe. Regardless of your travel plans, please continue to follow the health and safety protocols outlined on the Return to Campus website and follow the recommended CDC guidance. Additionally, please continue to check our COVID-19 website for the most up-to-date information.
We wish you a safe, relaxing, and joyous holiday break.
Yours in Loyola,
Thomas M. Kelly
