Dr. Gema Kloppe-Santamaría Book Publication

Congratulations Dr. Gema Kloppe-Santamaría! Dr. Kloppe-Santamaría, Assistant Professor of Latin American History, has just published her first monograph, In the Vortex of Violence:  Lynching, Extralegal Justice, and the State in Post-Revolutionary Mexicowith the University of California Press.  The book, officially released 8/19/20, describes the paradox of “fully functional electoral democracies that are well integrated into the global economy and that possess a vibrant civil society and active citizenry” but nevertheless “continue to struggle with high levels of violence, weak justice systems, and, increasingly, the proliferation of various forms of vigilante justice.”  Reading those sentences in her introduction reminded us of the fragility of American political culture at the moment.    Please join in us in congratulating Dr. Kloppe-Santamaría on her new book.  She is previously the co-editor of two volumes, one on Violence and Crime in Latin America, and the other on Human Security and Chronic Violence in Mexico.
