MA Public History and MLIS Dual Degree at Loyola (With Dominican University)

Public history and library science are central to our understanding of the contexts, histories, and artifacts that led to the world we live in today. As a graduate student in both of these fields, you can be part of preserving, interpreting—and evolving our understanding of—the past.

Offered in partnership with Dominican University, the MA in Public History/Master of Library and Information Sciences dual degree program prepares you for both archival and public history work. In these distinguished programs, you'll gain experience in working with artifacts, curating digital materials, producing original research, and more—all while learning in one of the nation's cultural capitals.

Program Structure

The MA/MLIS can be pursued full-time or part-time. Classes are held at Loyola's Lake Shore Campus and Dominican University's River Forest Campus, conveniently located near Chicago, an area rich for public history study and research. Classes for the MLIS are also offered online or hybrid through Dominican University.

The program is on a 10-week quarter system, and you can begin the program in the Spring or Fall Quarter.

Dominican University’s Master of Library and Information Science program is one of the only American Library Association (ALA)-accredited MLIS programs in the Chicago area. In this distinctive program, you’ll develop values central to effective librarianship and the skills required to work in traditional and non-library settings alike. This program can be completed in-person, online, or hybrid and offers concentrations in 15 high-demand areas.

Tuition and Costs

The History: Public History MA and Master of Library and Information Science is a dual degree program that awards separate degrees for each program completed. Therefore, cost will equal the summation of each individual degree program's tuition times the number of credit hours taken in that program. Some dual degrees may have shared credits that adjust the total cost of the program. Application Process

History: Public History MA and Master of Library and Information Science is a dual degree program between Loyola University Chicago and Dominican University. Students must apply to each program separately and must be accepted as classified students by both programs. Application for admission to the dual degree may be made at any time while students are enrolled in either program. No advance assurance can be given that admission to both programs will be granted.

Transcripts sent by the student to Loyola are considered unofficial documents, and while they may be utilized for initial review of your application, official transcripts are still required. Official documents should be sent by the institution to gradapp@luc.edu.

International Applicant Requirements

An official English language proficiency exam is required for international applicants whose native language is not English. If you have non-U.S. educational credentials, you are required to submit an official transcript evaluation. The transcript evaluation cannot be waived.
