Announcement on Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program

Dear Faculty and Staff, 

Do you have a federal student loan? If so, you may be able to benefit from temporary changes made to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.  

The PSLF program works by offering loan forgiveness to eligible public servants who have made 120 qualifying student loan payments. Previously, only Federal Direct Loans with a standard or income-driven repayment plan qualified for PSLF, however, last year the U.S. Department of Education announced the “Limited PSLF Waiver,” a temporary period during which borrowers may receive credit for payments that formerly did not qualify for PSLF.  

Borrowers with Federal Family Education Loans (FFEL), Perkins, and other federal non-Direct Loans must consolidate their loans through the Direct Consolidation Program before applying for the PSLF expanded waiver. This process can take several weeks, so applicants are encouraged to act now to ensure you have enough time to file.   

You must submit a PSLF form and/or consolidate your non-direct loans by October 31, 2022 to get the benefit.   

The Department of Education has a dedicated tool to help guide your application for the limited waiver. Some borrowers may not have to take any action to have their loans canceled, but it's recommended to confirm your specific details before October 31.  

If you are a current Loyola employee and need your full-time employment at Loyola certified for the PSLF program, fill out sections one and two of the PSLF form and send it to Human Resources at hr-payroll-processing@luc.edu. Human Resources will complete section three and email the form back to the borrower. If sending completed forms with Social Security number, submit your form to hr-payroll-processing@luc.edu via secure file submission. Do not include your Social Security number in any emails for data security purposes.
