Celebrating the Feast of St. Ignatius

July 22, 2020

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Every July, we honor the Feast Day of St. Ignatius of Loyola by joining together for prayer, a communal meal, and volunteer service. This year, we seek to continue our tradition virtually. St. Ignatius noted that, “Love is shown more in deeds than in words.” This year, we encourage the Loyola University Chicago community to take a moment to offer a concrete expression of love by joining us in prayer and committing to be of service.

The plans for this year’s celebration of St. Ignatius include the following:

Feast Day Prayer Service
A livestreamed prayer service from Madonna della Strada Chapel will be celebrated on Friday, July 31 at 1:00 p.m. You can join this service here

This 30-minute prayer service will incorporate scripture readings, music, and reflections on our Jesuit tradition. At the end of the service, there will be a blessing for those who seek to engage in volunteer service.

Ignatian Volunteer Service Opportunities
We have developed a number of ways for Ramblers to be contemplatives in action this year. Options include:

  • Corresponding with individuals who would benefit from receiving support
  • Providing assistance in archival or research projects
  • Creating greeting cards through artistic expression
  • Contributing a small donation to an Ignatian inspired ministry
  • Engaging in personal formation in diversity through online learning

You may take up to five hours of a workday to participate in these service initiatives. For further information on service opportunity descriptions and to register, please click here

Staff Council Trivia Happy Hour
In lieu of the annual feast day picnic, Staff Council will host a Zoom trivia happy hour on Friday, July 31 at 4:00 p.m. Gather colleagues, your department, or just yourself for some low-stakes Ignatian fun. Trivia categories include St. Ignatius of Loyola, Jesuit colleges and universities, music, geography, and current events. The Zoom link to join can be found here.

We hope you will join us in celebrating St. Ignatius in these most unusual times. Godspeed to all as we seek to advance our commitment to be persons with and for others, especially in this time of great need.
