Racial Capitalism and Health Disparities
The Institute of Racial Justice’s Racial, (IRJ), Capitalism Across the Disciplines Series has two major goals.
First, the series is inspired by the IRJ’s mission of accelerating transformational research and education towards racial justice and equity. The series will host discussions designed to center the racial foundations of capitalism in the lived realities of Blacks, Indigenous Peoples and People of Color. The talks and the discussions thereafter will focus on the ways the history as well as the current conditions and experiences of Blacks, Indigenous and People of Color continue to exhibit subjugation and oppression.
Second, while the series centers how contemporary patterns of racial subjugation were, and continue to be entrenched under capitalism, the speakers will also explore how those forms of subjugation intersect with gender, sexuality and class as well as how these multiple forms of oppression and exclusion can be overcome.
Each talk in the series will focus on a discrete theme. The first talk will focus on racial capitalism and health disparities. The second talk in the series will focus on racial capitalism and housing disparities. The format of the virtual series is based on a ‘Davos style’ question and answer session at the beginning between a moderator and the speaker before it is then opened up for discussion with the audience. Each talk in the series will last one and a half hours.
