Statistical & Online Survey Advising

Statistical Advising and Online Survey Advising Services - Spring 2020

Statistical advisers provide assistance with basic, how-to questions regarding the use of statistical applications, NVivo, and Opinio. Help with the most commonly used packages, e.g., IBM SPSS Statistics, Minitab, SAS, is more comprehensive than support for more specialized applications, e.g., HLM, Lisrel, STATA.

DayTimeLocationNameSoftware Specialities
Wednesday 2:00 pm - 7:00 pm IC 204 John Sienkiewicz SPSS Statistics, Opinio
Friday  2:00 pm - 7:00 pm IC 204 John Sienkiewicz  SPSS Statistics, Opinio

Students should call or email Lauree Garvin: lgarvin@luc.edu, (773) 508-7653, for assistance with statistical, QDA (NVivo), or online survey (Opinio) applications when no adviser is available.

Services for statistical applications include answering for basic, how-to questions about procedures and/or minimal interpretive help with the results of analyses when using Loyola-supported statistical applications or QDAs. For online surveys students are expected to self-train. However, assistance is provided for more complicated procedures, e.g., construction of consent forms, creating invitations, pre-populating survey fields, etc.

Limited consultation is available for graduate students for thesis or dissertation research. The graduate student must have approval for such consulting from her/his committee chairperson. Assistance includes advice regarding the following: the selection of appropriate statistical models for analyzing data, data set design, statistical software programming, interpretation of program output to a degree appropriate to the research, and design of tables, graphs, and charts. Students are expected to run their own statistical analyses for thesis or dissertation work.

Consulting is by appointment only. To schedule an appointment contact Lauree Garvin at 773-508-7653, lgarvin@luc.edu.

There are two options for training:

  • In-Person Consultations These are individual, hands-on sessions that last between 60 to 90 minutes. We will train faculty and graduate students actively involved in thesis/dissertation projects or in faculty research in the basics (getting started) of the following applications: IBM SPSS Statistics, NVivo, and Opinio. One week advance notice is required for a consultation.
  • In-Class Demonstration/Hands-on Sessions Faculty can request a demonstration for their classes for the following applications: IBM SPSS Statistics or NVivo. Classes can be demonstration-only or involve some hands-on work. If hands-on is required the faculty member is responsible for booking a computer lab in which to hold the training. Two weeks advance notice is required for in-class demonstrations/hands-on sessions.

Contact Lauree Garvin, lgavin@luc.edu, 8-7653, to arrange a consultation or in-class session.
