The goal of the Technology Formats group is to address legacy formats and the means for transitioning faculty, staff and students, using these technologies to newer, more universal formats.
Determine how to support users of legacy formats and document/communicate the process of selecting alternatives. A three-step process involving the University Libraries and the Faculty Center for Ignatian Pedagogy was created:
- The University Libraries AV Department will coordinate with faculty that are still using VHS to re-purchase the content in a current format, where possible.
- If VHS content cannot be replaced in current format, faculty will coordinate with librarians for help identifying alternative materials.
- If alternative content is not available, faculty will be referred to the Faculty Center for Ignatian Pedagogy for additional support.
Develop and implement a notification system to communicate when legacy formats will no longer be supported.
- A web page documenting the process, procedure, deadlines and supported/unsupported formats will be implemented.
- Social media (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Blogs) will be utilized to communicate updates.
- Targeted e-mail messages will be sent regarding legacy media formats.
Provide information regarding recommended and supported formats.

No, existing VHS players will remain in electronic classrooms after June 1st provided they are still functional. However, any VHS player that fails after this date will not be replaced.
Yes, DVDs can be played back using a Blu-ray player.

With the fall semester underway, I want to remind you of some information related to support of technology in our classrooms:
Classroom Technology Support
Please know that the ITS Help Desk is available to help you with technology related needs during the term. To contact the Help Desk please call 773.508.4ITS. Additionally, all classrooms have printed documentation onsite describing how to use the equipment in that room. If there’s anything we can help you with or if you would like to schedule some private consultation, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Many of you are already aware of the fact that VHS is no longer the video industry standard, having been replaced in recent years by digital formats, including DVD and streaming video. Consequently, the equipment to play VHS is very difficult, if not impossible, to purchase or repair. We have targeted June, 2013 as the date when we will no longer be able to support VHS formats in classrooms, and we will be working with the equipment that we have on-hand throughout this academic year. The University Libraries are working with the Faculty Center for Ignatian Pedagogy, ITS, and the Registrar to make the transition from VHS to digital format for classes as seamless as possible. This includes scheduling rooms according to these requirements and providing support for faculty to identify current VHS material in more contemporary formats or suitable replacement materials. We recognize some materials will be hard to replace so we are prepared to work with faculty now in preparation for next year.

Additionally, an academic technology committee has been in place for a number of years to share, evaluate, and recommend technologies that may be used institution-wide to support teaching and learning.
