Introducing Loyola University Chicago’s LLM and SJD Programs for International Lawyers

Loyola University Chicago

LLM Program for International Students and Lawyers

Loyola University Chicago’s LLM Program for International Students and Lawyers offers a degree in U.S. Law and a degree in International Law. In both degrees, our students choose a certificate focus that matches their academic and professional interests. Loyola University Chicago is known for academic excellence in a nurturing and welcoming environment, emphasizing not only doctrinal teaching, but also skills training. Our students are empowered to become the legal professionals and ethical advocates our world needs.

Loyola University Chicago’s SJD Program in International and Comparative Law is our newest degree program. The three-year Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD), the highest degree in law, is a highly selective postgraduate program primarily for students who have graduated from our own LLM programs. The program is designed for students aspiring to be legal academics who wish to pursue sustained independent study, research, and writing. SJD candidates work under the supervision and guidance of School of Law faculty members, the Advisory Committee, and the SJD Committee.

Faculty

Our acclaimed international law faculty is headed by Professor James Thuo Gathii and Professor Margaret Moses. Whether you plan to sit for a U.S. bar exam or to focus on international law, all of our faculty are actively engaged in advising the international students. The focus of our internationally experienced staff is on supporting your transition into the U.S. legal academic and professional world. You may tailor your curriculum from the over 200 courses we offer each year, and you will study alongside our JD students.

Program Flexibility

Our flexible approach allows you to study part- or full-time, begin the program in August or January, and choose your own curriculum.

This year, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are permitting students for the first time to begin and complete the degree online. Loyola University Chicago has long been a national leader in online education, and our faculty members continue to hone their online teaching skills through intensive training.

Health guidelines permitting, we hope to have a safe and substantial on-campus presence this fall. Our committed staff has developed various scenarios to be able to respond promptly to the latest development of the pandemic. In this unique situation, our international students have the opportunity to choose among a variety of teaching modi:

  • Study at our downtown Chicago campus in dual mode (combination of courses in the classroom and online)
  • Study in ourhybrid part-time weekend program that requires your on-campus presence on every second weekend of the semester
  • Study fully online, or one semester online and one semester on-campus
